For this reason, I often recommend the Nancy Drew series of books to young readers. However, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind if you are concerned about the books’ reading levels.

For starters, even though all of the Nancy Drew books are published as if written by the original author, Carolyn Keene, in reality, there have been multiple writers behind the series over the decades. This means that the stories can have varying authorial voices, and the way that they handle subject matter can also vary.

It is important to understand the reading level of the Nancy Drew books if you are thinking of recommending them to younger readers. This is especially true for people who have never read a Nancy Drew adventure and, as such, don’t know what to expect from the books.

Here are a couple of aspects of the Nancy Drew books to keep in mind in the context of their reading level.

Nancy Drew Is Older Than You Might Think

Nancy Drew books are widely considered young adult fiction, and most readers have a distinct image of a young teenage Nancy Drew. However, after a while, the character aged up because she never really acted like a 16-year-old.

This means that many of the interactions between Nancy and the supporting cast of characters have an adult tinge to them.

Often, questions of authority, gender conformity, and racial equality are presented to the reader, which may prove difficult for some 8 to 12-year-olds to fully understand.
